A Brief History
Graceview Presbyterian Church was formed in the year 2000, as a result of the amalgamation of Grace and Hillview Presbyterian Churches, two legacy churches situated not far apart in the west end of Toronto.
Both of the original churches date back to the spring of 1955, a time when development was booming on the western edge of Toronto and surveys determined that population growth was more than sufficient to support two new Presbyterian churches in the area. The congregations of both churches initially met in private homes and, later, in public schools, until funds were raised to purchase sites and erect church buildings. In September 1958, Hillview’s Christian Education Centre was completed, followed by the sanctuary in 1969. In 1961, Grace’s permanent church building was erected. Both churches continued to serve their faith communities well until the 1990’s, when dwindling congregations made it difficult to meet financial obligations. As that decade was drawing to a close, Hillview and Grace began to consider possible options, ultimately making the decision to amalgamate. It was agreed to retain the Grace Church building, because, although Hillview’s facilities were larger, Grace’s building, located on a main street, was in far better repair, and had a bigger parking lot. The newly amalgamated church was named Graceview Presbyterian Church.
On April 2, 2000, the first amalgamated service was held, a service of thanksgiving and hope for the future. The dedication of the people and the inspirational guidance of Graceview’s first minister resulted in a successful amalgamation. Today, Graceview Presbyterian Church ministers not only to those of the legacy churches, but also to many others who have begun attending since amalgamation.
