GOOD Friday

Sermon Synopsis – March 29th 2024

John 18 & 19

In this poignant sermon for Good Friday, delivered during a service with Communion by Intinction, the congregation is invited to reflect deeply on the raw emotions and struggles of life, particularly in the face of suffering and loss. Drawing from the Psalm reading and personal experiences, the speaker acknowledges the existence of “Bad Fridays” – moments of deep despair and questioning where it feels as though God is silent and distant. Amidst the darkness and confusion of Good Friday, the speaker challenges traditional
interpretations of divine violence and offers a different perspective on the cross of Christ.

Rather than viewing Good Friday as a day of divine abandonment or passivity, the speaker suggests that it reveals the true nature of God – a vulnerable and
compassionate God who suffers alongside humanity.

Through the suffering and death of Jesus, God demonstrates solidarity with humanity and offers hope and redemption in the midst of pain.

The sermon encourages listeners to embrace their own “Bad Fridays” with faith and courage, trusting in God’s transformative power to bring beauty out of ashes.
Ultimately, Good Friday is seen as a precursor to Easter Sunday, where the darkest moments give way to the light of resurrection and new life. As the congregation is reminded of the promise of redemption and renewal, they are invited to find hope and meaning in their own struggles, knowing that God is always at work, even in the darkest of times.
