Sept 25 – Weekly News

 Sept. 25, 2024

In keeping with Pastor Eric’s sermon “Rein in Your Tongues” here is an article about taming one’s anger.

Scripture to Tame Your Temper

 Norman Vincent Peale

It is very important what you do when angry. Your action rides, to a large extent, on the destiny of your life. You can stir up trouble, make enemies, ruin chances or make yourself sick.

On the contrary, by proper handling of anger you can keep situations under control, cement friendships, win respect and stay healthy.

I suspect that some people’s lives have been ruined by anger. By the same token, the skillful mastering of anger has added to the effectiveness of many. The following verses constitute an extraordinarily effective anti-anger technique:

“Good sense makes a man slow to anger, and it is his glory to overlook an offense” (Proverbs 19:11). This verse pits good sense against anger and stresses the value of imperturbably overlooking offense. When anger surges upon you, just say to yourself, it is stupid to get angry. It won’t get me anywhere except into trouble. The momentary satisfaction of letting go isn’t worth the difficulties I will experience as a result.

In this manner, you may talk yourself into being sensible. This rational procedure will slow down your anger-reactions, and help you rise above the provocation. In other words, meet anger with urbanity.

“Know this, my beloved brethren. Let every man be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger” (James 1:19). This verse teaches us to be alert to people and situations but always to react slowly to emotional stimuli.

The longer you can keep quiet the more effective will be your reactions. Don’t say the sharp words, do not make the quick retort, do not write that nasty letter–or, if you do, tear it up. Say nothing. Keep quiet. Make no rejoinder. Practice the great strategy of delay…. “Do not let the sun go down on your anger” (Ephesians 4:26).

Never let a day end without getting rid of your anger. This advice is psychologically very sound. Empty anger out every night to keep it from accumulating. In your prayers drain off any anger content that may be in your mind.

Forgive everybody and practice the great art of forgetting. You can build up resistance to anger by letting these verses soak into your thought processes until they exert an automatic check upon your emotional reactions. Study them. Memorize them. Use them.

Outreach is organizing a food/cash drive for the St James Food Basket to provide them with selected items for their client families. Please bring in cans of tuna, canned soup (without meat – examples would be vegetable, tomato, mushroom) and packages of Kraft dinner. We will put a wheelbarrow at the front of the church to hold your items. If you prefer, you can make a cash donation (cash, cheque or e-transfer) which will be used to buy these items in bulk by the Food Basket. Please mark your donation for the Outreach account and include your envelope number. Let’s aim to fill the wheelbarrow to overflowing by Sunday, October 20th and share our blessings with those who are struggling to make ends meet.

PRAYER REQUESTS AND PASTORAL CARE

* Pray for the people of war-torn countries who are living in fear and uncertainty. Pray for those close to home who need your special love and guidance during trying times.

* Irene Cherniak is back in hospital.

* Please keep in your prayers the following: Roman Parypa, Nancy Green, Charlotte Prentice, Joan and Peter Kohar, Margaret M’s brother, Simon, the Jarvis family, Olive S. and Gordon F. Please keep these folks, and indeed everyone in our church family and people around the world, in your prayers.

Another Round of Applause – Sing Etobicoke, Bravo! Returns For a Third Year

Neilson Park Creative Centre (NPCC) is excited to announce funding from the Ministry for Seniors and Accessibility’s Seniors’ Provincial Grant. Through this grant, NPCC will be offering a third iteration of its highly successful Sing! Etobicoke program.

This year’s program Sing Etobicoke, Bravo! will continue to offer free space for seniors to sing together, find community, and forge new connections.

This free program will consist of twenty choral workshops with the NPCC community, as well as the Graceview Presbyterian Church’s membership, and the Fellowship Church and its congregation. The program kicks off its first 10 sessions on October 7, 2024, taking place every Monday from 9:30am to 11:30am until December 16. An additional 10 sessions will run from January 6 to March 17, 2025.

The program will be held on a rotating basis between three venues: Neilson Park Creative Centre, 56 Neilson Drive, Etobicoke Graceview Presbyterian Church 588 Renforth Drive, Etobicoke Fellowship Christian Reformed Church, 800 Burnhamthorpe Road, Etobicoke Led by a team of professional and emerging music instructors, each session in this weekly singing series will include a structured offering of vocal-warmups and an exploration of new and familiar music curated for each session.

After each singing session, there will be an informal social reception with refreshments provided by the organizers and a few activities to promote a strong sense of community amongst the group.

All are welcome at these fun and pressure-free sessions regardless of vocal range or expertise. There will be no audition process, but instead an open acceptance policy. Stronger singers will be encouraged to take on additional roles such as singing harmony parts, though this is by no means required and is entirely subject to comfort levels. Those seeking to join are encouraged to register for one, more, or all of the sessions!

Singing is a joyful activity and the exercise of doing that together in a group can provide a strong sense of physical community. 98% of survey participants from last year’s sessions agreed that singing supported their mental wellness and general well-being.

Please note that each of the three venues have reliable climate control and environmental standards to ensure participants feel safe and comfortable in these spaces.
