Have you ever watched an historical movie and felt compelled to research what really happened? There have been many times while I have watched TV that I had more questions related to that show’s content. Case in point: I have just finished the Netflix series entitled KAOS, which is a very modern take on Greek mythology. We had Zeus, Hera, Orpheus, and Medusa, to name just a few. I was compelled to research these characters and to learn of their “real” stories. I learned something while watching this series. Now this is where I segue into The Chosen, where those who attend the Bible Study sessions are halfway through the 4th season. I cannot emphasize enough how much this series has impacted me and the way I now look at the Bible. After each episode, I am compelled to look up the related scriptures, and by doing that, I have realized how masterfully the creators of this series have weaved these very same scriptures into a series that is mostly fact but with side stories that actually are not in the bible, but which do make sense. Every episode makes me think. Every episode does make me emotional. The closer we are getting to Jerusalem and Palm Sunday and, ultimately, the crucifixion, the more it tugs at my heart and emotions. This series has also provided me with what is now my favourite passage from the bible. When I saw it and heard it in episode 1 of season 1, it hit me like a ton of bricks. Isaiah 43:1 “Fear not, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name; you are Mine”. Those three words, “You are mine” I keep near and dear to my heart.
This series has also had a great effect on those who are acting in it. I recently saw an interview with Jonathan Roumie who plays Jesus in the series. He was asked by the interviewer, “If Jesus were sitting here, in front of you, what question would you ask Him?” After a brief pause, Jonathan looked up and responded, “If Jesus were sitting here in front of me, I would ask Him, did I get it right?” The woman who was conducting the interview could not go on as she was so emotional at his response. Well, Jonathan, we who have been studying this series can definitely say, “Yes you did get it right!”
You can all download the Chosen app (it is free) on your tablets or computers. You will not be sorry.
As a testament as to how faithful this group of people who attend bible study is, we had a lot of technical difficulties yesterday and were unable to get the episode to play on the TV. Instead of caving in and going home, the 7 of us hovered around my iPad and watched episode 4. (view picture below) It was worth it. Thanks to Kathy T. for leading this session in Pastor Eric’s absence.
