November 1, 2025 – Minister’s Message
By coincidence, I ran into the worship service of our renting congregation, the United Church of God (UCG), right here in our sanctuary. It was Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, and I noticed the many cars parked outside. Out of curiosity, I stepped in and was able to …

Good King Wenceslas – Who Was He?
The Wenceslas of the well-known carol was born Vaclav III in 907 in Prague. He was an obscure Bohemian duke who was never, in fact, a king. His mother was Dramohira the Arrogant, daughter of a pagan tribal chieftain and herself an avowed pagan, and his father was Vratislav, who along with his mother Ludmilla had converted …

How He Found God
This was found in a scrapbook given to me by Nancy Green, compiled by her mother and grandmother. Nancy thought I might find something useful and interesting in it to share with everyone. Here is an example of how music can sometimes do what mere words can’t.

How I Got Here from There
The previous issue of Graceviews contained an article in which I described aspects of my twelve years of Christian education in the Catholic school system. I wasn’t sure how much interest there would be in such a personal story, and I was surprised that a number of you commented on it and told me you enjoyed it. One person, who I would have…

Bible Study – The Chosen – Season 5
Bible Study –
The Chosen Season 5
Season 5 of The Chosen deals with Holy Week and the events of the five or six days before the crucifiction. Like the other seasons we have studied, it is remarkable in its portrayal of the characters and vivid depiction of the time. Much of it is directly biblically based, with all four gospels represented, but the parts that are fictional, i.e. not described in the New Testament, serve to fill in the gaps and are not outside the realm of possibility of how things could have happened. We gather at 12:15 on Tuesdays, watch the episode, and have an interesting and lively discussion afterwards, led by Pastor Eric. All are welcome to join us.
My Latest Project – a Crokinole Board.
One of the projects I worked on this summer was a Crokinole Board. You might be familiar with Crokinole as it is a game thought to be invented in Canada in the 1800’s. The World Championship Crokinole Games are held every year in Tavistock Ontario. If you are not familiar with the game but would like to know more, please consult my friends at ChatGPT or Wikipedia.

October 5 – We welcome Ali and Chuka
Hallelujah! What a joyful day at Graceview! We celebrated the baptism of our new members, Ali Tavasoli and Chuka Ikele, witnessing God’s amazing grace and the transforming power of faith in Jesus Christ. It was truly moving to see lives renewed and hearts opened to eternal salvation. Afterward, our potluck fellowship lunch brought everyone together with an abundance of dishes from many cultures — a delicious reminder of the love and unity we share as one family in Christ. I thank God for orchestrating such a beautiful day of witness and community. May He continue to bless us with many more moments like this!
Remembering Tree Event
We Remember…
On November 2, 2025, we will be holding our very special Remembering Tree Service, where we commemorate all those of our church family who have died since our amalgamation in 2000. As of this writing (Sunday Oct. 26), I know of several families of our faithful departed who do not regularly come to church, who are planning to be present for this service. This year, the names of 135 people will be read out by seven volunteers.
How did this Graceview tradition start? In June 2016, Bob and I spent a week in New York City. While there, we visited the very moving and sobering September 11 Memorial, whereon the names of the nearly 3000 people who died on that fateful day are engraved. Each year a memorial service is held in New York, and every name is read aloud by family members, first responders, and other community members. Bob posed the question to Session, “What would it be like if we did that at Graceview to honour our departed friends and family members?” Session liked the idea, and the decision was made to do this at a service in late October or early November every year. Janet Ottewell, who is responsible for adding leaves as needed to our Tree, agreed to organize this, and a new tradition was launched.
You Just Never Know…
On the night of September 10, 2001,
246 people went to sleep to prepare for their morning flights.
2,606 people went to sleep to prepare for work in the morning.
343 firefighters went to sleep to prepare for their morning shift.
60 police officers went to sleep to prepare for morning patrol.
8 paramedics went to sleep to prepare for their morning shift.
None of them saw past 10:30am.
Before you go to sleep tonight, kiss the ones you love, hold them a little closer, and never take one second of your life for granted.
