Remembering Tree Service

It is with much emotion that, this Sunday, we again remember our dear departed friends and loved ones whose names appear on that magnificent Remembering Tree at the back of our church. Sometimes, when I am alone in the church, I will actually touch the names of the ones who had a big impact on my life and who I miss to this very day.

Ted Wallace and I became very good friends over the years. He seemed to have adopted me and my husband, Peter. He and Joan would invite us to lunch periodically. The first “date” was at the Markland Wood Golf Club where he and Joan had a social membership. He was a most generous host and Peter and I did enjoy getting to know the 2 of them. We then moved on to lunches at the Terra Cotta Inn. I fell in love with that restaurant and with the yummy food that we got to eat as well as the great conversation. There were also the times at church that he would whisper to me. “Susan, there’s something in the trunk of my car. Be sure to pick it up after church”. When we went to his car, there in the trunk were several bottles of wine. This happened several times and I do not think I had to buy any wine for a very long time. When he took possession of his prized Jaguar, he even let me drive it out to the Terra Cotta where we were all going to have lunch. That was a rush I will not soon forget. I miss him and all that he did for our church. He was a dear friend.

Eric Medhurst was a hard nut to crack. When I joined the choir, I found him very unapproachable, but the longer I was in the choir, I could see how devoted he was to his music, to his church and to his family. He and I would have great conversations about music and of course, Star Trek. He had a sense of humour that not many people got to see. It was when he returned after being in the countryside doing RCM Piano Examinations that I entered the choir room and found a bag of Picard Peanuts on my chair. Not many people understood why I was so excited to get Picard Peanuts, but the Trekkies out there will understand. I miss him and the musical leadership he gave to Graceview. I call his tenure the Golden Era of Music at Graceview.

Don Ryan was a musician through and through. He sang in the choir; he was in Let There Be Music and he was a hard core Queensman. He loved music and that was passed down to his granddaughter Jamie who is an outstanding opera singer. I miss hearing his thunderous bass voice which anchored the choir so capably.

While there are so many names that I could mention, the last will be our dear Anne Wright. I will remember Anne forever, because when I first entered the doors of Graceview, she was the first person who greeted me, who sat with me (or was it the other way around?) and who made me feel very welcome. Every Sunday I would walk down the aisle and there would be Anne and John who when they saw me would shift over to let me sit with them. They were my go-to people with whom to sit until I eventually joined the choir. If it were not for Anne, I may not have returned to Graceview for a second visit. She has a very special place in my heart.

These people did so much for Graceview, as did others whom I have not mentioned. Perhaps we can all think of someone who has departed this earth and remember what that person meant to us, what they did for us, the impact they had on our lives and how they left Graceview a better place; a place that is welcoming to strangers; that will be supportive to those in times of need and will continue to foster a sense of family and of belonging when you enter through the front doors.

So, let us speak their names aloud lest they be forgotten. To paraphrase Isaiah 43:1 “I WILL call you by name; you are forever in my heart.”

“I thank my God in all my remembrance of you, always in every prayer of mine for you all making my prayer with joy…” Philippians 1:3:

WEEKLY GIGGLE

The Frugal Presbyterian

The frugal Presbyterian walked into the house panting and almost completely exhausted.

“What happened, honey?” inquired his wife.

“It’s a great new idea I have to be a better steward of our resources,” he gasped. “I ran all the way home from the stewardship committee meeting behind the bus and saved $1.50.

“That wasn’t very bright,” replied his flustered wife. “Why didn’t you run behind a taxi and save $10?”
